Cusco is the oldest city in the Americas and was ruled by the Killke civilization from 900 AD to 1200 AD before the arrival of the Incas. After the conquest of the Incas, Cusco became the capital of the Inca Empire.
Our tour begins with a stroll to the Plaza de Armas (main square) on its cobblestoned streets to visit the Gothic-Renaissance style Cathedral built on top of a sacred Inca temple using stones from Sacsayhuaman. Continue through the narrow streets to the Qoricancha Sun Temple, a marvelous shrine that was built with religious prophecies during the Inca apogee. Next, we continue with a short drive up above Cusco taking in the lovely scenery. Fix your eyes on the impressive Inca complex of Sacsayhuaman with its huge boulders and magnificent presence. As you cross its massive opening you are in awe with the gigantic stones affixed together so perfectly. Our professional guide will provide the many theories behind the Incan site, which was initially built by the Killke culture and was expanded by the Incas. Next, we will come upon another mysterious site, Qenqo which means labyrinth, which has subterranean passages in its interior. It is also believed this was a ceremonial place where the Incas used to possibly embalm their dead and make sacrifices. Then we will visit the Tambomachay Incas Baths before returning to Cusco to relax and enjoy a divine dinner in one of the finest restaurants in Cusco.
