During the Inca Empire, the festival Inti Raymi was created by the Royal Inca, Pachacútec to celebrate the winter solstice of the southern hemisphere and the beginning of a new Inca year. The Incas celebrated for nine days by dancing, feasting, drinking chicha and performing animal sacrifices, giving thanks to Pachamama, and to ensure a good harvest. Nowadays, Inti Raymi is celebrated only on June 24 in Cusco, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
