Cusco is preparing for a modern change in transportation and tourism. A tunnel to Machu Picchu, Peru’s World Wonder of the World, which attracts thousands of tourists every year, is being developed in the imperial region.
As reported by the Peruvian Government, the new tunnel, which is one of the largest construction works currently underway, will provide several facilities for the upcoming foreign tourists and Cusquenian citizens visiting the ruins.
What will be the route of the tunnel to Machu Picchu?
According to information from the Ministry of Transport and Communications, work began in the district of Santa Teresa, located in the Cusco province of La Convención. The modern route will be an alternative way to reach the famous Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.
The construction of this work will be 1,744 meters long and will have two main lanes, as well as a control center for optimal operation. The population of Cusco is already eagerly awaiting the completion of this railway project, whose sole purpose is to reach Machu Picchu.
¿And when will the tunnel start operating?
Currently, the construction of the tunnel to Machu Picchu is in a 42% physical progress, whose resources and budgets for this year are already secured until the completion of the railway work that would be scheduled for December 2023.
The completion of this project will optimize the trafficability of this route, which will greatly favor the movement of passengers and cargo for local and regional markets. Additionally, the new tunnel will strengthen tourism, as it will be an alternative to reach Machu Picchu by rail.
